Transplanted: A Memoir
Unfolding along the backdrop of the northern Alaskan landscape, Transplanted is about both a geographical and medical transplant. Together with my husband and two small children, I moved to Fairbanks in Alaska’s untamed and beautiful interior. Invigorated, we embraced the challenge and adventure of living in the Far North. Until one day when I was suddenly diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and was medevaced to Seattle to undergo urgent chemotherapy treatment. While my life was literally “going south,” I found strength in the Far North. The extraordinary landscape phenomena of the Arctic – the aurora borealis, earthquakes, ice fog, holdover winter fires in subzero temperatures – parallel the medical story and provide a unifying metaphor.
